Because these gorillas are not fully habituated, their reactions can be unpredictable. Rangers remain close at all times, carefully monitoring both human and gorilla behavior to ensure safety and prevent stress to the animals.

Strict rules apply throughout the experience. Visitors must maintain a minimum distance of about 7 meters, avoid sudden movements, speak in low voices, and never attempt direct eye contact or physical interaction with the gorillas.

One important health precaution is that anyone showing signs of illness is not allowed to participate. This is to protect the gorillas, who are highly susceptible to human respiratory diseases due to their genetic similarity to humans.

Photography is allowed, but flash is strictly prohibited. Photographers are encouraged to take slow, deliberate shots, respecting the animals’ space rather than trying to force close-up encounters.

The presence of researchers during the habituation experience is a key difference from standard trekking. They observe gorilla reactions, record behavioral data, and gradually accustom the group to human observers over time.
