Tracking Chimpanzees in uganda
Tracking chimpanzees in Nyungwe or Kibale National Parks is one of the most exciting wildlife experiences in both Rwanda and Uganda. The trek begins early in the morning, with guides leading visitors through dense montane rainforests filled with towering trees, vines, and birdsong. As you hike along muddy forest trails, the anticipation builds while listening for distant hoots, screams, and the rustling of branches that signal the chimps’ presence.
Once the chimpanzees are located, the forest suddenly comes alive. Chimps may be seen swinging through the canopy, grooming one another, feeding on fruits, or resting on branches above. Their speed and energy make tracking dynamic and unpredictable, offering a raw and immersive encounter with one of our closest relatives. Guides help interpret their behaviors, explaining social structures, calls, and daily routines.
Beyond the chimps themselves in Nyungwe, the experience highlights rich biodiversity of this forest. The park is home to many other primates, colorful butterflies, and rare plant species, making the trek rewarding even before the chimps are found. Tracking chimpanzees in Nyungwe is not just a wildlife activity, but a deep forest experience that connects visitors to conservation, ecology, and the rhythm of the rainforest.
Nyungwe Forest National Park protects one of Africa’s oldest rainforests and hosts over 500 chimpanzees among 13 primate species. Two habituated groups are available for trekking and it starts early as around 05h00 AM at reception centers. Guides and trackers locate the chimps, which can take 2–6 hours due to the hilly, steep terrain and the chimps’ mobility . Once found, you spend up to 1 hour observing their behaviors, socializing, and vocalizing etc.The experience is physically demanding with rugged trails, but rewarding for the biodiversity (including colobus monkeys, birds, and rare plants). It’s a great add-on to Rwanda’s famous gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park.
