6 Days Rwenzori Mountain Hiking Tour

Day 1: Arrival in Kasese – Transfer to the Base of the Rwenzori Mountains

Tourists arrive in Kasese either by road from Kampala or by a domestic flight to Kasese Airstrip. Upon arrival, they are met by a representative from Unique Africa Ventures and transferred to a luxury lodge at the base of the mountains. The afternoon is spent relaxing, preparing hiking gear and enjoying magnificent views of the Rwenzori ranges. A warm briefing is conducted to introduce tourists to the route, safety measures and expectations for the hike. The lodge offers a peaceful environment where tourists can unwind before the adventure begins.

Day 2: Start of the Hike, Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut

After breakfast, tourists meet the mountain guide teams and begin the hike from the Nyakalengija trailhead. The trail starts through farmland and forested areas where tourists can spot black and white colobus monkeys, chameleons and a variety of bird species. The path gradually ascends into thicker forest, offering cool air and the relaxing sound of rivers running through the valley. The hike provides a gentle introduction to the Rwenzori ecosystem while the guides share stories about the region and its conservation. Day 3: Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut

Tourists wake up to fresh mountain air and enjoy breakfast before starting the ascent toward John Matte Hut. The trail becomes steeper and more exciting as it crosses rivers, wooden bridges and rocky sections. This day introduces tourists to the beginning of the bamboo and heather zones, creating beautiful scenery with moss covered trees and mist drifting over the hills. The hike is physically engaging but rewarding, offering numerous scenic breaks along the way. Upon arrival at John Matte Hut, tourists rest, enjoy a hearty meal and marvel at the views of the Bujuku River valley below.

Day 4: John Matte Hut to Bujuku Valley – Return to John Matte for Overnight

After breakfast, tourists continue deeper into the Rwenzori landscapes with a day hike toward the Bujuku Valley. This section introduces the famous boggy areas where unique vegetation surrounds the trail, including giant lobelias and giant groundsels that create a surreal environment. The views open up to reveal the towering peaks of Mount Baker and Mount Stanley, forming perfect photography moments. Tourists explore the valley at a comfortable pace before beginning the return journey to John Matte Hut. The evening is spent relaxing at the hut, enjoying warm drinks and recounting the day’s achievements.

Day 5: Descend from John Matte to Nyabitaba Hut and Back to the Base Lodge

Tourists begin the descent with beautiful morning views over the forested valleys. The walk back to Nyabitaba Hut allows tourists to enjoy the scenery from a different angle, with more opportunities to spot wildlife and appreciate the diverse vegetation. After a break at Nyabitaba Hut, the final descent continues toward the trailhead at Nyakalengija where the support team awaits. Upon arrival, tourists are transferred back to the luxury lodge at the base of the mountain. A warm shower, comfortable bed and a freshly prepared dinner provide the perfect reward after the days of hiking.

Day 6: Departure

After a relaxed breakfast, tourists check out and begin the journey back to Kampala or head to the airport for a domestic flight. For tourists with evening flights, optional activities such as a short tour of Kasese town or a visit to nearby tea plantations can be arranged. The adventure concludes with a drop off in Kampala or at Entebbe International Airport.
